Modern display systems for simulation applications, be they for aviation, naval, automotive or even large visualisation and educational/entertainment systems, are all using a tiled approach to achieve high resolution and large fields of view. The aviation applications are particularly demanding, as the fidelity of the matching and blending between the tiled segments needs to be of a high order for flight simulation. This paper looks at the measurement instrumentation techniques that can be used in order to align such large and critical systems. Ultimately such measurement systems allow a fully automatic alignment of colour, colour uniformity, blending between tiles and gamma to be made. Whilst front or rear projected systems are the main references for the analysis, much, if not most, of the principles outlined can apply to tiled large flat panel displays as well.
