Abstract:

This paper is devoted to the study of the optical scintillation characteristics of polycrystalline stilbene obtained by hot pressing from powders of various disperseness. The effect of the initial grain size of the powders on the light output and optical transparency of the polycrystals is studied. It is shown that an initial grain size of about 2.2–3 mm is optimal for recording short-range radiations when the sample is 5 mm thick. A light output can be obtained from a polycrystalline scintillator that is 50–75% relative to a single crystal. It is shown that the main factor that degrades the scintillation characteristics when the grain size is relatively small is the reduction of the optical transparency. The structure of the given samples is studied by x-ray structure analysis.
