It is shown that, if (like the point-spread function in imaging optics), the relative brightness distribution in a radiation source of finite size is taken as the nonimaging display function, the actual surface-illuminance distribution is determined by the integral of the convolution of the nonimaging display function with the surface-illuminance distribution by a point source. This paper discusses the use of a reflecting surface to equalize the surface illuminance, irrespective of its imaging properties.
