Abstract:

The light losses have been studied in composites of glass with a single- or double-layer coating of composition SiO2 and/or TiO2 obtained by sol–gel technology. The measured absorption of the composite always differs from the theoretically calculated value as a consequence of the inhomogeneity and the different degree of porosity of the nanosize film and the diffusion of oxides from the substrate. The barrier properties of the SiO2 layer in double-layer composites largely depend on the rheological characteristics of the film-forming solution and the deposition regime.
