In memory of John Sheridan (1964–2022)

The holographic science community has suffered a significant and irreversible loss. On 1 November 2022, the distinguished Irish scientist John (Seán) Sheridan passed away suddenly and untimely.
During his short life, he made significant contributions to advance different facets of holography. He published approximately 500 papers focused on various aspects of holography, including three-dimensional hologram theory, photosensitive media, and numerical simulations of diffraction to image formation features in systems with holographic optical elements.
In particular, his contribution to the preparation of the “Roadmap on holography” (J. T. Sheridan et al., Journal of Optics 22(12), 123002 (2020), a fundamental and guiding work that emphasizes the place of holography in the modern world and prospects for its development, is noteworthy. John was the driving force behind this extensive document, which was compiled by a large team of the world’s leading holographers. He also published numerous teaching materials and papers on the history of holography.
John Sheridan actively promoted international collaboration among scientists worldwide. He had numerous friends in Russia. This jocund and witty person’s bright memory will live on in our hearts forever.
