Subject of study. Spectrally singular modes and subpicosecond laser pulses in a one-dimensional dispersive photonic crystal with parity-time symmetry. Aim of study. Theoretical description of the spatial-temporal dynamics of the formation of spectrally singular spatially localized modes by a short optical pulse in a photonic crystal with broadband parity-time symmetry. Method. The boundary problem of dynamic Bragg diffraction of radiation near a spectral singularity and a exceptional point is solved by a spectral method in the two-wave approximation. Main results. It is shown that in the regime below the laser generation threshold, the amplitude of the spectrally singular mode increases linearly with increasing pump pulse duration, which leads to a significant change in the intensity and shape of the transmitted and reflected pulses. Compared to the case of the gain-loss Bragg grating, in a photonic crystal with parity-time symmetry the spectral width and intensity of the singular mode are smaller, and the critical thickness of the medium at which amplified ultra-narrowband radiation appears increases. Practical significance. The high sensitivity of the parameters of spectrally singular modes to the modulation amplitude of the permittivity of a periodic medium will serve as the basis for the development of new principles for generating and controlling the parameters and dynamics of optical radiation with an ultra-narrow spectrum.
