It has been five years since the publication of the special issues of Opticheski˘ı Zhurnal [Nos. 1 and 3 (2007)] [J. Opt. Technol. 74, Nos. 1 and 3 (2007)] devoted to the work of the scientists and engineers of the State Institute of Applied Optics (GIPO), which then was 50 years old.
The catalog of scientific–applied research carried out by the institute has been appreciably expanded since then, and a series of scientific-research and experimental-design work has been successfully completed, as a result of which new samples of optoelectronic systems and an optical base of components have been created.
The main specialization for the institute, as before, is the development of various types of optoelectronic systems. A large part of the work of the institute is traditionally associated in this case with the development of systems that operate in the IR region.
By joining the holding company Optical Systems and Technologies Scientific-Manufacturing Concern in 2010, GIPO became the head organization of this holding for development of thermal viewers.
The latest achievements of the institute both in IR instrumentation and in the creation of other optoelectronic systems are fairly regularly published in the periodical literature.
This special issue of Opticheski˘ı Zhurnal shows that OAO GIPO, while remaining the leader in the development of thermal-vision systems, was and remains one of the leading optical centers of this country, carrying out a wide range of scientific and applied research.
