This paper describes a search for methods of nonvacuum roasting of pelletized optical materials based on metal oxides. It is shown that silicon dioxide has the best sintering capacity in an atmosphere of water vapor at the optimum temperature of 1200–1250°C. The density of the resulting pellets in this case was about 2 g/cm3. Positive results are shown for the coalescence of zirconium dioxide in an atmosphere of ammonium halides. The difference between samples obtained at a temperature of 900–1300°C is not substantial in this case. The density of the material in an item is 3.6 g/cm3.
