Abstract:

This article presents a brief review of the first experimental papers on the generation of powerful pulsed VUV radiation when it is excited by a relativistic electron beam in inert gases in the solid, liquid, and gaseous states in the temperature range 58–300 K. The details of the experimental technique are considered, and the results of experiments on the generation of powerful spontaneous and stimulated VUV radiation are presented. The xenon-dimer laser created as a result of these studies is discussed.
