This paper proposes a mosaic design of devices for the backlighting of active-matrix liquid-crystal displays, using efficient composite LEDs that emit white light of various color temperatures. The main factors that determine the brightness and contrast of the displays under intense external lighting are evaluated, along with the total power required by the display and such characteristics as the luminous efficacy, the lumen equivalent of the emission spectrum, and the long-term stability. The main parameters are presented for special inorganic microcrystalline photophosphors developed to provide a luminous efficacy of 125–180 lm/W and a display luminance of more than 1800 cd/m2 from composite LEDs with white radiation. This paper contains data on a new composite LED with a converter consisting of an inorganic photophosphor that includes semiconductor CdS–CdSe quantum dots and possesses a luminous efficacy of up to 206 lm/W.
