This paper reports an experimental study of the refractive index of dense mercury vapor at the lasing wavelength of a XeCl* laser, 308 nm. It is established that the refractive index varies in accordance with the Lorentz-Lorenz formula in the range of mercury-vapor concentrations 1.2 × 1018-1.8 × 1019 cm-3. The results of the measurements are presented in the form of a graph of the refractive index (np - 1) × 104 vs the mercury-vapor concentration.
