Abstract:

A new system of subjective methods of measuring resolving power (visual acuity) on the basis of modern standards is proposed in order to solve problems of physiological optics. New principles for constructing tables of optotypes have been developed in accordance with modern methods of iconics. The new set of optotypes makes it possible to extend the possibilities of determining the visual acuity: to measure visual acuity above 1.0 more accurately, to accurately determine the visual acuity of patients confined to bed, and also to measure near visual acuity less than 0.1. New computer programs have been developed in order to monitor visual acuity on the basis of the modulation-transfer function. A high correlation has been detected between the indices of visual acuity determined from optotypes and the upper limiting frequency of the modulation-transfer function.
