This paper discusses the optical layout of a fiber-optic end interferometer in which two beams interfere--one reflected from the free end of an optical fiber, and one that is returned into the fiber by an external reflector. The interferometer is theoretically analyzed and experimentally studied, and its optimum parameters from the viewpoint of visibility of the interference pattern are indicated. The sensitivity to displacement of the external mirror is experimentally determined to be 0.014nm in a wide frequency range. It is pointed out that this layout is promising for constructing various types of fiber-optic sensors.
