This article describes a process for obtaining a specified refractive-index distribution in glass by modifying the crystalline structure of a glass-matrix mask, followed by ion-exchange diffusion through it. This process can be used to fabricate large-diameter lenses (20-100mm) with a radial refractive-index distribution. The question is considered of how the intensity of the irradiation of the glass with UV light affects the diffusion transparency of the mask.
