This paper presents formulas for calculating the refractive index of the extraordinary ray for hemispherical shells composed of synthetic sapphire and its textured analog, making it possible to determine the local birefringence for any point of the shell's surface. The influence of the placement geometry of the index ellipsoid on the birefringence in synthetic sapphire items is analyzed.
