Abstract:

This paper presents a theoretical and experimental study of the bending of a quartz fiber caused by shrinkage of a nonconcentric protective coating deposited on it as it hardens. A formula is obtained and analyzed that connects the bending radius of the fiber with the initial quantities: the radius of the fiber, the radius and eccentricity of the coating, the moduli of elasticity of the materials of the fiber and the coating, and the shrinkage of the coating as it hardens. A bending technique is developed for estimating Young's modulus and the shrinkage as the coating material hardens from the variations of the bending radius of quartz fibers with a nonconcentric coating. This bending technique is experimentally certified in fibers with a UV-hardened coating.
