Abstract:

Subject of study. Interrogation scheme and demodulation algorithm parameters for a fiber-optic ocean-bottom seismic module. Aim of study. Development of a fiber-optic ocean-bottom seismic module based on Michelson interferometers with an extended dynamic range. Method. The sampling frequency was modeled considering pulse propagation delays in interferometer arrays, sensing fiber lengths, and sensor spacing. The upper dynamic range limit of the homodyne demodulation algorithm was evaluated at this frequency. Verification was conducted by comparing vertical component responses of the developed and reference geophones under pulsed shock excitations on a shaker. Main results. A five-sensor multichannel architecture within one module was implemented. A 1 MHz sampling rate ensures a dynamic range of 140 dB (98 rad) at 500 Hz with a 10 µrad/Hz1/2 noise floor. Geophone calibration coefficients (0.009 rad/(mm/s)) were obtained, confirming high spectral correlation with analogs in the 1–100 Hz band, challenging for other geophone types. Practical significance. The results support development of fiber-optic seismic systems satisfying modern marine geophysics requirements.
