Subject of study. ZnO:Sn,Fe photocatalytic coatings formed on the cylindrical surface of SMF-28 single-mode silica optical fibers for localized singlet oxygen generation. Aim of study. Formation of an oxide photocatalytic layer on standard SMF-28 optical fiber and evaluation of its ability to generate singlet oxygen and perform photooxidative activity. Method. The coatings were fabricated using a polymer-salt method. The crystalline structure and morphology were studied by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. Singlet oxygen generation was assessed by electron paramagnetic resonance using 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine as a spin-trapping agent. Photocatalytic activity was determined by the methylene blue degradation under ultraviolet irradiation. Main results. The feasibility of forming ZnO:Sn,Fe coating on standard SMF-28 single-mode optical fiber by the polymer-salt method while preserving the fiber geometry was demonstrated. A uniformly distributed layer of fine-dispersed agglomerates was formed on the fiber surface. Singlet oxygen generation was confirmed by linear accumulation of the nitroxyl radical (0.30 µM/min, irradiation wavelength 365 nm). In the methylene blue photodegradation experiments, a threefold increase in the rate constant compared with photolysis was observed (0.012 versus 0.004 1/min). Practical significance. The results demonstrate the possibility of creating photocatalytically active optical fibers for remotely controlled and spatially localized generation of singlet oxygen.
