Subject of study. Chemical composition and resistance to pitting corrosion of AISI 304 stainless steel after laser structuring. Aim of the study. Establishing the possibility of increasing the resistance of AISI 304 steel to pitting corrosion by changing the chemical composition of the surface layers during laser structuring. Method. Laser structuring of the surface using parameters that ensure heating and melting of the material. The study included an analysis of the surface morphology using microscopy and profilometry, a study of the phase-chemical composition of the surface, and electrochemical corrosion tests. Main results. Laser structuring is shown to cause a redistribution of chemical elements in the near-surface layer and the formation of an oxide film. It is found that an increase in the content of manganese oxide and iron reduces the resistance to pitting corrosion, while the presence of nickel and its oxide contributes to an increase in the protective properties. Laser structuring modes that provide increased corrosion resistance of steel are identified. The scientific novelty lies in establishing a correlation between the chemical composition of a laser-modified surface layer and the steel’s resistance to pitting corrosion. Practical significance. The obtained results confirm the feasibility of using laser structuring as a localized and contactless method for passivating steel components without the use of consumables. This method holds promise for extending the service life and protecting small components of sensors and other devices operating in aggressive environments.
