Subject of the study. The sensitivity of the polarization gating system to changes in arterial saturation, depending on the mutual orientation of the main directions of the polarization filters. The purpose of the work. Development and optimization of the structure of an optical-electronic sys tem for assessing changes in blood saturation when solving functional near-infrared spectroscopy problems. Methods. Experimental study of the transformation of the parameters of polarized radia tion during its interaction with biological tissue. Digital processing of polarization-separated images using the Stokes method. Statistical and correlation analysis of the spatial distributions of the pola- rization and energy parameters of the radiation. Main results. A structure of a two-channel polariza tion gating system is proposed based on the developed methodology for the rational selection of the configuration of the main directions of polarization filters for simultaneous registration of radiation fluxes scattered from the surface and deep layers of biological tissue. When probing biological tis sue through the skin, the system’s best sensitivity to changes in blood oxygen saturation is achieved for the main directions of the polarizer at an angle of 45° and the analyzers at angles of 45° and 90° relative to the corresponding abscissa axes of the reference coordinate systems. A statistically sig nificant positive correlation was established between the radiation fluxes and saturation. The stan dard deviation of the residual regression on the calibration sample for this configuration was 1.63%. Practical significance. The polarization system can be used both for direct detection and monitoring of the functional hemodynamic response, and for calibrating the functional near-infrared spectros copy system.
