Subject of study. The spectral directional transmittance of a non-dispersive infrared gas analyzer for trace carbon monoxide, determined by the directional transmittance function of a bandpass interference filter, including its out-of-band rejection characteristics. Aim of study. Development of a method for calculating the spectral directional transmittance of a non-dispersive infrared gas analyzer for trace carbon monoxide, providing a reduction in the additional measurement error caused by sensitivity to carbon dioxide by more than two orders of magnitude compared to the conventional approach. Method. The method includes the formation of the instrument’s spectral characteristic based on the real directional transmittance function of an infrared filter, taking into account non-zero out-of-band rejection transmittance, and optimization of the filter parameters according to the criterion of minimizing sensitivity to carbon dioxide and water vapor. Main results. Taking into account the real out-of-band rejection transmittance of the filter increases the absorbed radiation flux of carbon dioxide by more than 800 times compared to calculations based on the Gaussian model. The optimal center wavelength of the filter is determined to be 4.61 µm. The calculated selectivity with two sequentially installed filters for carbon dioxide is 2.4, which has been experimentally confirmed on a prototype gas analyzer. Practical significance. The method can be used at the design stage of high-precision non-dispersive infrared gas analyzers for monitoring trace concentrations of carbon monoxide in multicomponent gas mixtures.
