Abstract:

Research subject. Photoluminescence ratiometric thermometry using tetraphenylporphyrin as a model system and the associated systematic artifacts that limit the accuracy of temperature measurements. Aim of study. Establishing the conditions for a reproducible determination of the temperature dependence of the ratio of the intensities of the fluorescent bands of tetraphenylporphyrin, taking into account the spectral sensitivity of the equipment and the thermal history of the sample. Methods. Fluorescence spectra were recorded under laser excitation over the temperature range of 25–75 °C. The spectra were corrected for the spectral response of the detection system using tungsten lamp emission and Planck’s radiation law. Spectra obtained under different conditions were compared. Main results. Neglecting the spectral response of the detection system was shown to introduce systematic errors comparable in magnitude to the temperature-induced changes. Nearly linear temperature dependences exhibiting hysteresis were obtained during a heating–cooling cycle. Scientific novelty. A procedure was developed for eliminating the key artifacts of ratiometric measurements. Temperature hysteresis was identified in the fluorescence band intensity ratio of the solution, indicating the presence of longlived, thermally induced energy states of tetraphenylporphyrin molecules. Practical significance. The conditions for the correct comparison of fluorescence spectra of a tetraphenylporphyrin solution in benzene have been determined, and limitations have been established for unambiguous determination of the solution temperature based on the ratio of the intensities at the maxima of two characteristic emission bands (FIR). The obtained results must be taken into account when using the luminescent ratiometry technique in practice, including for tasks in microfluidics, biomedical research, and diagnostics of functional materials.
